LITERATURE
Before we get started, let's ask the question...why? Why read? Reading adds so much to your life. It increases your knowledge, you communicate better, it increases your empathy and you gain inspiration from others. Reading just opens the world to you. There are numerous studies that magnify the effect that reading has on your brain. Research shows that it can also help with Alzheimers disease. Puzzles and crosswords can help tremendously too.
So, does it matter what you read? Not really. But if you are reading negative, you'll get negative thoughts running around in your brain. Find something that captures your imagination, your mind and immerses you into a world that feeds you. This can relieve stress and put your mind in a far more interesting and happy place.
So now that we talked about why and what, let's talk about when. If you can set aside time during your day, even if it's just 15-20 minutes you'll make massive strides towards its benefits and your enjoyment. It's just like anything in life. If you truly value something ( or someone ) you'll make the time. Studies show that reading before bed vs looking at a screen is the best way to fall asleep. Well, one of the ways :). Anyway, it can relax you, takes you away from tv, your phone and any other distractions. A point that must be made here. When possible, hold a real book in your hands.
E-readers are fine but it's not the same as a physical book. Plus it causes eye strain. When you hold a real book in your hands there's a connection.
So, what DO I read? That's subjective. To help find out, try reading the inside dust cover/jacket, reviews, Goodreads, recommendations from people who do read, local libraries and really just pick something from your interests. There are lists everywhere that usually put the classics on there so you can't go wrong with any of them.
Once you start reading, you'll continue. It becomes addictive.
Finally, a habit that IS good for you.
